On this day in 1978, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their second album titled “You’re Gonna Get It!” Recorded for Shelter Records, at Shelter Studio in Hollywood and produced by Denny Cordell, Noah Shark and Tom Petty, the album originally had a working title of “Terminal Romance.”
Featuring Tom on rhythm guitar and vocals, Mike Campbell on lead guitar, Stan Lynch on drums, Ron Blair on bass, and Benmont Tench on keyboards, this is considered to be the band’s classic lineup. Upon its release, “You’re Gonna Get It!” was generally described by the press as a step backwards for the band, as compared to their debut release.
However, it did chart higher than its predecessor, climbing to #23 on the Billboard album chart. It also features several fan favorites including “I Need to Know,” “Listen To Her Heart,” “Baby’s A Rock ‘n’ Roller” and the title track. “I Need to Know” climbed to #41 on the Billboard singles chart and “Listen To Her Heart” reached #59. Despite its lukewarm reception, “You’re Gonna Get It!” is certified “gold” selling over 500,000 copies worldwide.
