RockChat Rewind with Joe Milliken.
On this day in 1975, King Crimson released the live album titled “U.S.A.” Recorded on the Island music label and produced by the band, “U.S.A.” was mostly recorded in June of 1974 at The Casino, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, with one track recorded at the Palace Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island. Also, keyboardist Eddie Jobson’s overdubs on three tracks were re-recorded in-studio.
This classic King Crimson lineup featured Robert Fripp on guitar and mellotron, John Wetton on bass and vocals, David Cross on violin, viola, mellotron and electric piano, Bill Bruford on drums, and Eddie Jobson on violin and electric piano.
The concert was recorded with the Record Plant NY Remote Truck, and two tracks were edited down as to be able to fit the entirety of the songs on the album. Also, the opening track, “The Heavenly Music Corporation,” is from an album that King Crimson leader, Robert Fripp, recorded with musician Brian Eno titled “No Pussyfooting.”
There have been four versions of the album released over the years including the original vinyl in 1875, a 30th Anniversary remaster in 2002, a mix of original multi-track tapes in 2005, and a 40th Anniversary edition featuring a different mix (overseen by Fripp) of the multi-track tapes in 2013.
After this tour and then the release of “Red,” Fripp would break the the band for a time, as to pursue solo projects. The track listing included several fan favorites including “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part II),” “Lament,” “Asbury Park,” “Easy Money,” and “21st Century Schizoid Man.”
