RockChat Rewind with Joe Milliken.
On this day in 1977, UFO released their sixth studio album titled “Lights Out.” Recorded for Chrysalis Records at AIR Studios in London and produced by Ron Nevison, “Lights Out” was the first UFO album to feature string arrangements and more diverse song structures than their previous, more straight-ahead rock releases. They incorporated lush ballads, unique dynamics and buesy, expressive, powerful guitar solos throughout.
Featuring the classic lineup of Phil Mogg on vocals, Michael Schenker on guitar, Paul Raymond on keyboards and guitar, Pete Way on bass and Andy Parker on drums, “Lights Out” would become the highest charting release for the band in America, climbing to #23 on the Billboard album chart. It featured fan favorites such as “Too Hot To Handle,” “Lights Out,” “Alone Again Or,” “Electric Phase” and “Love To Love.”
Upon its release, however, Michael Schenker was succumbing to the pressures of fame and on the night of the band opening an American tour, went AWOL and did not return to the band until a year later. “Lights Out” has greatly influenced the direction of such bands as Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Guns ’n’ Roses and went gold, selling over 500,000 copies worldwide.
