RockChat Rewind with Joe Milliken.
On this day in 1984, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double trouble released their second studio album titled “Couldn’t Stand The Weather” on the Epic music label. Recorded at the Power Station in New York City and produced by Stevie Ray Vaughn, Richard Mullen and Jim Capfer, it was the follow up to the band’s critically acclaimed debut “Texas Flood.”
Stevie wrote half the tracks on the album, while also recording a few cover songs including Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile,” “Tin Pan Alley,” and “Cold Shot.” The album received mostly positive reviews, but was also questioned for not offering enough originally written material as well. Stevie’s brother, Jimmy Vaughn, played rhythm guitar on two tracks and Stan Harrison contributed on saxophone.
The album reached #31 on the Billboard album chart and the video for “Couldn’t Stand The Weather” got significant airplay on MTV. The band toured throughout the world (America, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand) for much of 1984 and one show in Austin, Texas was recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show.
The album was reissued in 1999 with an audio interview and four studio outtakes, then reissued again in 2010 featuring more studio outtakes and a 1984 live performance from Montreal. “Couldn’t Stand The Weather” has gone platinum, selling over a million copies worldwide.
