RockChat Rewind with Joe Milliken
On this day in 1989, Todd Rundgren released “Nearly Human” on the Warner Bros. label. Recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley and The Plant in Sausalito, California, “Nearly Human” was Todd’s first release in four years and featured an upbeat, pop-rock and soul kind of vibe. The songs revolved around jealousy, self-doubt, personal loss and spiritual recovery.
The album was Todd’s first collaboration with the lovely and talented Michele Gray, former model and Tubes backup singer who would eventually marry Todd.
A departure from most of Rundgren’s previous solo albums in which he plays most of the instruments, “Nearly Human” featured many guest appearances including former Utopia bandmates Roger Powell, Kasim Sulton and John “Willie” Wilcox, as well as Tubes’ members Vince Welnick and Prairie Price. Others include Larry Tag (bass guitar), Lyle Workman (guitar), Bobby Womack (vocals), Clarence Clemons (vocals) and Michael P)luznick (percussion).
“Nearly Human only reached #100 on the Billboard album chart and to this writer never received the recognition it deserves, with such uplifting songs as “The Want Of a Nail,” “Can’t Stop Running,” “Parallel Lines,” and “The Waiting Game.” If you love Todd… get this album!
