On this day (June 11) The Knack released their debut album on Capitol Records titled “Get The Knack.” Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Mike Chapman, who had just produced Blondie’s “Parallel Lines,” the album took just two weeks to record.
The album was an instant smash hit for the band, going “gold” (500,000 copies sold) in just 13 days, the fastest-selling album for the label since the Beatles’ “Meet The Beatles” in 1964. Ironically, The Knacks image and album featured a promotional campaign to mirror that of the Beatles.
Although the album received instant success from fans and radio, some media boycotted the band because of their refusal to do interviews with the press. Some music writers began to criticize the band for what they perceived as arrogance, hype and a stuck-up attitude expressed in their songs.
The album spent five weeks at #1 on the Billboard album chart, and the single “My Sharona” was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “My Sharona” was also the number one song on the “Top Pop” singles chart for 1979. The follow up single, “Good Girls Don’t” reached #11 on the Hot 100 chart. “My Sharona” was also the #1 song in six countries that year. The album was remastered and reissued in 2002 and has gone on to sell over three million copies worldwide.
