RockChat Rewind with Joe Milliken.
On this day in 1967, The Jimi Hendrix Experience released the legendary debut album on Track Records (in the UK) titled “Are You Experienced.” Recorded at De Lane Lea, CBS, and Olympic Studios all in London, “Are You Experienced” is widely considered to be one of the most influential albums in rock and arguably the greatest “debut release” by any rock artist. The album was recorded over a five-month period, and completed over 16 separate studio sessions. It was re-released in America by Reprise Records that same year.
“Are You Experienced” reached #2 on the UK album chart where it stayed for 33 weeks, then reached #5 in America on the Billboard album chart, where it stayed for 106 weeks, 27 of those in the Top 40. It also peaked at #10 on the R&B chart, where it stayed for another 70 weeks. Although no songs were released as singles, “Are You Experienced” contains several of Jimi’s most memorable hits, including “Hey Joe,” Foxy Lady,” “Manic Depression,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Fire” and the title track. It was also listed #15 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time…. there are 14 rock albums that are better? “Are You Experienced” has sold over 5 million copies worldwide.
