RockChat Rewind with Joe Milliken
On this day in 1985, Sting released his first solo album on A & M Records titled “Dream of the Blue Turtles.” Recorded at Blue Wave Studio in Barbados and Le Studio in Quebec, Canada, and produced by Sting and Pete Smith, the album title was named after a dream of Sting’s. The album proved to be a block-buster debut for The Police front-man and launched a stellar solo career.
“Dream of the Blue Turtles” reached #2 on the Billboard album chart (kept from #1 by Springsteen’s “Born In The USA”) and #3 on the UK chart (kept from #1 by Springsteen and Marillion’s “Misplaced Childhood”), and produced three Top 20 singles with “If You Love Somebody” (#3), “Fortress Around Your Heart” (#8), and “Russians” (#16).
The album was nominated for two Grammy Awards (“Album of the Year” and “Best Pop Vocal Performance”) and produced the movie “Bring On The Night,” which documented the recording of the album and its subsequent tour. “Dream of the Blue Turtles” hit the “top five” in 10 countries (#1 in four countries) and would go on to sell more than three million copies worldwide.
