On this day (July 7) in 1977, Styx released their seventh studio album on the A & M label titled “The Grand Illusion.” Recorded at Paragon Recording Studios in Chicago and produced by the band and Barry Mraz, the album is considered by many to be the band’s finest effort.
“The Grand Illusion” climbed to #6 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, and two singles cracked the Hot 100 singles’ chart with “Com Sail Away” (#8), and “Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man) (#29). The album also featured several other fan favorite-concert stables including “Superstars,” “Miss America” and the title track. It was the album that launched the band into super-stardom, including a sold-out world tour and consistent radio-play on FM rock stations.
The classic album cover was created by artists Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, with the design paying homage to the renowned Rene’ Magritte paining “Le Blanc-Seing. Original drummer, John Panozzo passed away in 1996. “The Grand Illusion” has gone on to sell over five million copies worldwide.
