RockChat Rewind with Joe Milliken
On this day in 1980, AC/DC released their seventh studio album on the Atlantic record label titled “Back In Black.” Recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas and produced by “Mutt” Lange, it was their first album to feature new vocalist, Brian Johnson, after the death of original front-man, Bon Scott.
After the 1979 breakthrough album “Highway To Hell,” the band decided to carry on after Scott passed in February, and recorded the legendary album over a 7 week span in April and May of 1980. It was mixed at Electric Lady Studios in New York City and the all-black cover was a tribute to Scott.
The album received a positive reception from the fans and critics, and the band enjoyed a year-long world tour. Four singles were released from the album, with “You Shook Me All Night Long” reaching #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 album chart, “Back In Black” reaching #37 and “Hells Bells” reaching #50.
“Back In Black” climbed to #4 on the Billboard album chart and stayed in the Top Ten for five months, and reached #1 in the UK for three weeks. It is one of the top-selling albums of all time and has gone on to sell over 50 million copies worldwide.
