RockChat Rewind With Joe Milliken
On this day (June 30) in 1980, Queen released their eighth studio album titled “The Game.” Recorded for the Elektra label at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany, and produced by Queen and Mack, “The Game” was the only Queen album to reach #1 in America and also became the band’s best-selling album in America.
The songs were recorded between June and July of 1979 and February and May of 1980, had a much different feel than its predecessor, “Jazz,” and was the first Queen album to utilize synthesizers. Despite great record sales, the album received mixed reviews from the critics. However, it has also gained positive momentum over time.
Two singles from the album reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “Another One Bites The Dust,” and a third single, “Play The Game” cracked the Top 40. The album hit #1 on the Billboard album chart (#2 in the UK) where it remained for three weeks, and has gone on to sell over 4 million copies worldwide.
