RockChat Rewind with Joe Milliken
On this day in 1978 The Who released their eighth studio album on the MCA label titled “Who Are You.” Recorded at Ramport Studios in London and produced by Glyn Johns and Jon Astley, “Who Are You” was the last album recorded with drummer Keith Moon, who died three weeks after the album’s release. Ironically, on the album’s cover, Moon is sitting on a chair with the words “Not To Be Taken Away” on it.
The album received mixed reviews from the critics, but not the fans, as it climbed to #2 on the Billboard album chart and #6 on the UK chart. There was also concern that the band would fold after the loss of Moon, but they eventually brought in Small Faces drummer, Kenney Jones, as a replacement.
There were a lot of problems during the recording sessions, including Moon’s drinking and drugging greatly hindering his ability to perform, Townshend had severely cut his hand after punching a window, and the sessions were also delayed due to Daltrey needing surgery for throat cancer.
The single “Who Are You” reached #14 on the Billboard “Hot 100” singles chart and #18 on the UK chart, and the album was re-issued in 1996 featuring five unreleased tracks. Other fan favorites on the album include “Sister Disco” and “Trick Of The Light.” Despite all the difficulties recording the album and the loss of Moon, “Who Are You” has sold over two million copies worldwide.
